Introduction

Building capability and capacity is a great challenge for many of Arkansas DBEs.  Thankfully, the DBE Supportive Services Program provides the much needed assistance to help DBE firms meet this challenge.   ADBECA has developed a “Contractor Training and Development Program”; which, is an intensive training program for minority and women-owned contractors certified in the Disadvantage Business Enterprise Program.   This fast track program focuses on providing in-depth training using a combination of classroom, hands-on and guidance training, all utilizing actual highway projects as models.  This method of instruction will allow for DBEs to gain valuable business skills sets that are needed to successfully perform on any construction related contract.  The ability of our DBE entrepreneurs to hone their abilities to succeed in the highway construction industry is our greatest concern.  It is with our greatest efforts that this training program will leave DBEs that participate in this program with a greater understanding of skill sets required to perform well as a highway related contractor.   Success is not imagined, nor is it just dreamed, it is sought after diligently with passion, determination and dedication, as well as support.  We at ADBECA are here to support our DBEs. Therefore, please look carefully at the training courses available throughout this catalog and request the available training that you feel will help you gain more capacity and capability in performing as a highway related contractor. Construction

Basic Blueprint Reading – Basic Blueprint Reading instructs participants on recognizing and understanding the various types of blueprints, shop prints and schematics used in a construction industrial environment. Trainees will discover how to comprehend, and interpret the different types of standard symbols and abbreviations found on electrical  construction drawings, schematics, record drawing  and shop drawings, wiring diagrams , including: the different types of scales used on architectural and engineering  drawings, identifying and interpreting sections, elevations and details the height, width, and length dimensions of a drawing, and interpreting the various symbols  and develop understanding the importance of various notations used on construction drawings.

Advance Blue Print Reading- This class is very high paced environment for contractors with some past knowledge and experience in reading blue prints.  This class will focus on AHTD projects only including interpretation of Standard Specifications with regard take off.  

General Estimating/Bidding This course will provide participants with clear and concise methods and guidelines for estimating and bidding projects of all sizes.  Learn how to pick the best jobs and which bidding process to apply or when should you turn down an opportunity to bid.  Discover how to get the best prices from your subs and material suppliers or when should you shop for better prices.  Figure out what the competition is doing.  Students will learn how to calculate various quantities of work from construction documents and understand the techniques used to determine labor hours and equipment time.  Students will be introduced to simple estimating software.  The tools you will take away from this course will immediately raise the profitability of your future jobs.  Further, this class will give the participants a very specific understanding of the differences between General Contractor vs. Subcontractor relationships, Types of Estimates, Negotiating vs. Hard Bid Contracts, Contract Documents, Getting Paid, Basis of an Estimate, etc.  Further, a breakdown of an estimate of mobilization, field cost – labor, fuel oil and grease, supplies and repairs, equipment rent, material cost, overhead items – payroll taxes and burden, general expense, as well as, anticipated profit.  This class will also enlighten the participant in the analysis of an estimate, example of an estimate showing how production in the field affects the Unit Cost of a Bid Item, with the difference being a Profit or Loss for the Bid Item.  In conclusion, this class will instruct the participants with specific estimation application per AHTD Department item codes.   Specific Estimation Applications per line Items:

  • a.        Actual Estimation for Excavation and Trucking/ Hauling for Item codes Division 200
    b.        Actual Estimation Selected Material, Quality Control and Acceptance/ Division 300
    c.        Actual Estimate for Curb and Gutter, Concrete Flatwork/ Rigid Pavement Division 500
    d.        Actual Estimation for Storm Drainage, Manholes, Drop Inlets, Junction Boxes & Sewer  Pipes,  Erosion Control and
            other Incidental Construction for Item codes Division 600                                          
    e.        Actual Estimate for Structural Concrete/ Structures Division 800 

Construction Surveying and Field Engineering Layout This class on standard procedures for construction layout, including Coordinate Control form plans centerline alignment, layouts of structures, percent of slope calculations for pipe laying, payment cross slopes, and theoretical grades for above. This course will help specifically for contractors that perform drop inlets, curb and gutter, culverts, pipes, manholes etc.

RFIs and As-Built Drawings Something’s never get built exactly as the original drawings.  As field adjustments are made during construction, contractors "mark-up" on the permit set that they use in the field and often issue Requests For Information (RFIs) reflecting this new information.  Once the job is all done, the designers incorporate any changes of dimensions, materials, form, and method of construction encountered in the completion of the structure or site to create an "as-built" drawing.  Learn how to effectively manage the RFI and “as-built” process by attending this course.  

Work Zone / Traffic Training & Safety Work Zone Traffic employees are faced with operational and safety challenges every day.  As a result, employees need to possess specific skills and knowledge in order to address these challenges confidently.  This requires a quality educational training program.  Contact ADBECA directly IN ADVANCE for specific details required attending this course. NOTE: Students will be required to provide ADBECA with a “no-liability” statement prior to training.     

Management

Developing Safety Programs and Policies Today’s construction world is driven by equipment and machineries. Therefore safety issues both at construction site and in maintenance shops are extremely critical. Lost time due to accident or equipment failure can cause devastating loss to a company. In addition regulators are watching. Penalties for nonconformance to regulatory rules can cause additional loss to a job. Therefore it is extremely important to develop policies and procedures regarding safety and training of all employees on those policies. In this course you will learn the basic understanding of the process to set up the Policies and Procedures as well as the implementation process.  

Meeting Occupational Safety & Control (OSHA) Requirements This course is designed for construction workers, foremen, job supervisors, and anyone involved in the construction industry.  Workers must receive additional training, when required by OSHA standards, on the specific hazards of the job. Understanding Quality Control & Importance to Contractors- This course will enlighten a contractor to the need for Quality Control on a job.  This course will help a contractor with job start-up preparation and follow-up.  This class is sure to make contractors aware of jobsite mishaps and contract pitfalls and other unforeseen looses. 

Understanding Construction Law– This course will allow contractors to understand the basic concepts of construction law.  This course will include, but not limited, to actual case studies, actual contracts, as well as, understanding your rights as a subcontractor.  Attendants will also learn what they should expect from their legal counsel as contractors. It is extremely important to have a complete understanding of any contract before signing; this class is for all contractors. 

Introduction to Construction Software This course will allow participants to explore the utilization of various forms of construction software and its application to construction estimation, bidding, and scheduling and construction management. 

Contractors Licensing Preparation Course This one day class will prepare participants for contractors exam required to obtain a license with the Arkansas Contractor’s Licensing Board.  This is a must have course for any contractor that needs guidance in the preparation for their contractors licensing exam. 

General Construction Management    This class will be a two part seminar held on a Saturdays to help the participant gain a general understanding in actual construction management such as, but not limited to: General Applications, Take offs, Bidding the work, Signing the Contracts and Bonding, Issuing Sub-Contracts and Purchase Orders, Scheduling the work with the use of Critical Path Scheduling CPM Diagram, Change Orders or Differing Conditions from that bid and /or Value Engineering/ Process Submittals. This instruction will include how all the phases interact with each other and how integrally important each one is to the other. 

Business Etiquettes- This class will focus on what you need to be successful in utilizing business etiquettes, this class will focus on professional dress, speech, as well as business communications through phone use to print.  This class tackles issues such as cultural diversity in the marketplace and in the workplace.  Finally, this class will give a professional approach to understanding business owners / employee relations.  This segment of the class will help you understand best practices in avoiding sexual harassment claims, labor laws and anti-discrimination policies.

Building Your Business and Personal Credit This course is designed to educate the participant on how to improve Personal credit scores and builds a business credit profile to increase their company’s borrowing capacity.
